Couple's Conference - 2005

A Reflection on Real Soul Food

You may have missed it this year, but don't let it happen again!

Just driving to the conference shows how different our needs are -- some chose to drive alone for some uninterrupted, private, adult-level conversation, while others enjoyed fellowship riding with other couples.

Our Couple's Conference at The WILDS exceeded everyone's Sign at the entrance of The WILDS, Brevard, NCexpectations regarding food, activities, accommodations, music, fellowship and the five marriage-oriented sessions with Dr. John Vaughn and his wife Brenda. Brenda and their daughter Becky were severely burned in a house fire nearly 30 years ago, with 3rd degree burns over 65% and 95% of their bodies respectively.  (Becky has endured 65 surgeries and is currently an "11th semester junior" at Bob Jones University.) Knowing that God loves and cares for them and He has a plan for their lives, they rejoice in the privilege of serving others in His name.

Topics for the weekend included the husband and wife roles in the family; how we view our time priorities as pieces in a pie-chart of time, where we squeeze pieces into the pie while knowing there are important priorities including God, church, work, family, etc., that will often suffer because of the way we view our priorities.

The music was top-notch -- listening to 16 men singing in perfect harmony to the glory of God was uplifting to say the least. Mac Lynch's name can be found as a composer of many songs in our hymnal and we were privileged to take part in a virtual choir of over 200 voices as he led the couples in singing.

There are more activities to take in than time and endurance would allow.  Everyone raved about hiking to the “4th falls” (and some jumping in), the "Land Trolley" and the "Giant Swing" separated the "men from the boys," so to speak.  We saw some fierce competitors in air hockey, ping pong, foosball, and we discovered what carpet ball was all about. While we returned home a little sore from all the stairs and the physical activities, we were refreshed in spirit from the whole experience.  We're already making plans for next year's conference -- you won't want to miss this one!
